Description
For Star Wars Forever contest.
The contest is to do one character from one of the movies. I was hesitant to do this because the idea of being "recognizable" to the movies implies (and I've seen a lot of) out and out copying. There's nothing wrong with copying, it does a lot for artists to improve their skills, and it takes more than a little skill to do a photorealistic copy. But, personally, I always feel like I'm "cheating" when I copy something, and I could never get behind it. (shrug)
Mirror deserves a lot of props to this, she just prodded and prodded and prodded for me to do it. I originally wanted to to the scene two seconds later, when Obi-Wan had drawn his lightsaber, and then I wanted to do it at an angle different from the movie to give it a different emotion. A half dozen tries and several pulled fists of hair, I threw up my hands in disgust and scrapped the idea. Mirror went back to prodding, and then I settled on this.
I haven't drawn this realistically in years, but Obi-Wan looks pretty good all things considered. I also learned how to do clouds and they, too, look pretty good. A couple of filters and a color balance later and we got this.
Poor Obi-Wan. This had to be the hardest conversation in his life.
As always, let me know what you think.

you did a great job! i like the expression on obi-wan's face. it really captures the emotion and the feeling of this piece. i like how the background turned out, simple yet still eye-catching. you done a great job with obi-wan because it does look like him in a cartoon-ish way. i agree with the other critique that you should have added some other detail to the lightsaber (well, he is a jedi after all). but even without the details, it's very clear that it is a lightsaber. but aside from that, i think you should have added some more detail and shadowi in his robes, but it would also look fine without. other than those, 'I Will Do What I Must' is a good piece and something to be enjoyed by people; star wars fans or not <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>
