"There is no ground in the Plane of Life, and there is no sky."
There is no ground because the ground is the back of the Deforester. It digs into a region, the trees on its back and moss on its guards blending seemlessly into the harmless nature around it; and then it slowly sucks the life force out of every living plant and creature around it, until only it's back remains vibrant in the murdered landscape.
Then, it moves off to the next forest.
I know I have a snowball's chance in a New England heatwave to win the contest but the idea was so cool I just had to try it. Back in the Dark Ages when I was in high school and thought I could be anything I wanted to be a character designer for video games. It's nice to relive the fantasy again.
I did the line art in my sketchbook, scanned it in, and colored it digitally. I learned a whole lot about texture doing this piece: from human anatomy and musculature to dirt and grit and grain to leaves. Because of that, I had great fun and this piece is a favorite as a result.
As always, let me know what you think!
